A short view of Märkischer Kreis

Märkischer Kreis is unique in its variety. It is one of the largest and most densely populated counties in Germany. Many protected areas invite to hike. Wonderful rivers, lakes and dams give a special attraction to the landscape. More than 170 attractions, museums and monuments invite to discover routes.

Our district ranks among the strongest industrial regions in North Rhine-Westphalia. Emphasis lies in the metalworking industry, the plastic processing and the building of plastic machines. Many companies export their products and enjoy a world-wide level of awareness.

Märkischer Kreis offers excellent transport connections with its two motorways. Most cities and communes in the province are linked  to the rail traffic net and with the public transport company „Märkische Verkehrsgesellschaft“ (MVG) you have the possibility of achieving all destinations in Märkischer Kreis by bus.

Märkischer Kreis has got efficient opportunities for further education. There is a vast number of vocational colleges and also  the „Märkische Fachhochschule“ as an University of Applied Sciences and the „Businesses and Information Technology School“ (BiTS ). Over 200 kindergartens and nearly 90 primary schools guarantee educational opportunities, which are within easy and safely reach for children.

Towns and villages

15 towns and villages characterize the face of Märkischer Kreis. When you compare its biggest towns Iserlohn (nearly 100.000 inhabitants) and the county town Luedenscheid (nearly 80.000 inhabitants) to its smallest towns Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde (6.949 inhabitants) and Herscheid (7.808) you discover major regional distinctions.

Every single town and village has attractive offers which can be used by the inhabitants, starting from a public library to the local adult education centre (Volkshochschule), public parks and even sport arenas. You should also visit the weekly market. Here you will learn a lot about the mentality of the people living in this region.

Nearly every matter of importance can be dealt with in your town council or local government. There you will also find the registration office, the housing office and the social welfare office.
